Problem
Facebook when started, had stronger privacy than Myspace, the
then leading social network. It is therefore ironic that it
now builds detailed dossiers on users' interests which it then
allows advertisers to
target, tracks
people across the web, and even tracked the web browsing
activity
of non-Facebook
users.
Remedy
- Legislate Do Not Track
- Antitrust investigation
- Legislation requiring social network providers keep non-public communications private
- User data rights
- Mark Zuckerberg is on record
as supporting European style data protection regulations (GDPR)
- Require reporting of data held on you by all who hold it
- Users should be able delete their data easily if they wish
- Require permission for any data sharing on you with no penalty for failing to grant permission
